    What is sheet metal?

Sheet metal is a general term for metals that are thin, often less than 1 millimetre in thickness. It’s one of the most basic and most used forms of metalwork due to its many functions and versatility.

Sheet metal can be bought in a wide variety of metals and can have special finishes applied to them to give each one unique properties, making them suitable for specific tasks and appliances.

    How is sheet metal made?

Put simply, sheet metal is made by running hot pieces of metal first through a series of roughing rolling stands followed by finishing rolling stands with the aim of flattening the metal while making it longer. Finally, the metal is cooled and rolled into coils ready for transport or further treatment.

Next, it may be pickled, a process which helps remove any impurities from the metal, such as stains or rust.

Finally, sheet metal can go through a final special finishing process, depending on its destined use. These processes include:

    • Galvanising – when the sheet metal is coated in zinc to give it resistance to corrosion
    • Tinning – coating the sheet metal in tin, primarily to be used for food cans
    • Anodising – used to give aluminium a thicker oxide layer of protection
    • Annealing – a process which makes metal more malleable
    • Tempering – adds hardness to the metal sheet, and can create surface textures

What is sheet metal used for?

The use of sheet metal will depend on what type of metal it’s made from, since the properties of metals can vary widely and make some more suitable for certain uses than others.

Some of the examples of how different sheet metals can be are:

    • Copper – as a great electrical conductor, it’s often used in battery systems and other electrical equipment. Plus, thanks to its aesthetic appeal and malleability, it’s often used in various forms of art
    • Aluminium – a lightweight metal, it’s used where weight needs to be managed. Popular uses include in boats, cars, planes, and cookware.
    • Galvanised Steel – protected from rusting thanks to the galvanising process, it’s often used in places where it may be exposed to water, such as in cars or in irrigation systems
    • Stainless steel – One of the most corrosion resistant forms of sheet metal, it’s often used in high-performance settings, such as planes, ships, and processing equipment.
