    What is sheet metal?

Put simply, sheet metal is metal that has, through a variety of processes, been transformed into long, thin pieces of metal. Often less than 1 millimetre in thickness, they can be made in varying sizes to suit different needs.

As well as varying in size, sheet metal can also vary greatly in its properties, which will depend on both the type of metal it’s made from and what finishing processes have been used.

Is sheet metal easy to make?

While the basic process for making sheet metal is relatively simple, it requires a number of specialists rolling stands. By putting molten metal first through the roughing rolling stands, and then through the finishing rolling stands, the metal is flattened and lengthened, giving it the sheet shape that it requires.

After this, there are a variety of different processes that the sheet metal can be put through, depending on its designated purpose.

Often the sheet metal will be pickled, a process designed to remove rust, stains, or any other impurities.

Finally, the sheet metal is likely to be put through a final finishing process to give it additional properties, protection, and make it better suited for its task.

Some of the finishing processes that the sheet metal might be put through include:

    • Galvanising – the sheet metal is coated in zinc in order to improve its resistance to corrosion
    • Tinning – the sheet metal is coated in tin so that it can be used in food tins
    • Anodising – gives a thicker oxide layer of protection to aluminium sheet metal
    • Annealing – a process which makes metal more malleable
    • Tempering – adds hardness to the sheet metal, and can create surface textures

Why should I use sheet metal?

Sheet metal has a wide range of uses, but exactly how a particular sheet metal will be used will depend on the metal it’s made from, and the finishing processes that have been applied to it.

Some of the uses that sheet metal is most commonly used for include:

    • Electrical conductors – copper sheet metal in particular is often used as an electrical conductor thanks to its properties.
    • Transport – Cars, boats and planes are all predominantly made up of metal, with much of that being sheet metal
    • Irrigation systems – these systems are often exposed to water, making it vital that any metal is resistant to rust, and so often use galvanised steel sheets
    • High performance equipment – from planes to factory processing equipment, these types of equipment require sheet metal that is resistant to corrosion, and so often use stainless steel sheets.

    FAQs

How much does sheet metal cost?

To find the best price for the specific sheet metal you want, it’s best to do your research, and not just take the first price you find.

Is sheet metal easy to find?

Sheet metal is normally easy to buy online, as there are a number of vendors who can make it to your specifications. However, they’re likely to vary in the types of sheet metal that they can provide, as this will depend on the type of equipment they have, as well as which metals they work with
